Red light, red light, STILL red light

January 31, 2012- I was on my way to work.  I took the side roads instead of the freeway that day and ended up waiting to turn left at a light that had I taken the freeway I'd be going straight through it instead.  Anyways, I didn't pay much attention to it at first, but then I realized EVERYONE else had gone except my turning lane.  So then I started paying attention.  The cars next to me went straight through their green light.  Obviously the turn light turns green AFTER the straight cars for that direction.  Nope.  So then the cars from the freeway have their turn.  Everyone took their turn a total of four times with me counting, but it went through the routine at least once before I noticed things were not normal.  My reason for not going on a red light (even though there were SEVERAL times where there were no cars in the intersection)?  I could see a cop just beyond the light, sitting in a parking lot, watching the road.  If I went through on red, it would not be missed.  So I sat there, the cars piling up behind me, waiting for the same light.  6 cars behind me waiting for four turns of the lights.  Finally I turned on my right blinker, changed lanes and went straight through the light, taking a small detour on my way to work.  Needless to say, the light turned green behind me for all the other cars when the next light ahead that I turned at turned green the first time.  I was also just a few minutes late to work.  Now, did the cop have anything to do with me waiting and WAITING through endless cycles of red lights?  Maybe, maybe not- but I might as well blame him- it WAS the last day of the month- maybe he was low on his quota of tickets.
