I know it has been a little while. I had a baby and I'm just starting to get back into a routine.
For this post I wanted to do a more musical post. So, the first thing I start singing is lullabies. (I've already started introducing other songs and helping him dance to them, but that's another post). So here's a list of some songs I sing as lullabies:
1. Edelweiss (from "Sound of Music" for some reason this felt like George's song)
2. You Are My Sunshine (now that he's gone I think of George when I sing this one)
3. Goodnight My Someone (from "Music Man")
4. Sweet and Low (it's just a part of a song- Lida Rose/Sweet and Low from "Music Man". This one is my favorite with Ben. I change the words too. "Sweet and Low/ Sweet and Low/ How sweet that mem'ry, not long ago/ Do I love you? Oh yes I love you/ And you will always, be all I need").
5. The last song in Disney's animated version of Jungle Book- not the lyrics, just the melody but the one where the girl sings about fetching the water. This one I sing often. My little Ben ended up in the hospital with the flu. They took blood, gave him shots, had several failed attempts at putting an IV in, and this is the song I'd hum in his ear. When I ran home to grab some things for our stay in the hospital I called Jon to ask where to find something. Ben started to cry and Jon put the phone on his stomach and I hummed this one and it calmed him right down.
6. Some song my Mom used to sing, possibly called "Sandman".
7. Now When the Rain Falls (from "The Scarlet Pimpernel")
8. A Child's Prayer (an LDS Primary song. I especially love the second verse).
9. Tender Shepherd (I think I sing the version from the "Peter Pan" with Mary Martin in it)
10. I Love to See the Temple (another LDS Primary song. If you are not LDS and don't like the words, just remember, it's the melody that counts. Find one that you like that is slow enough to rock to and just cuddle your baby. I remember nannying for some LDS kids and I'd sing to them before nap time. Sometimes they'd say, "Shepherd" or "Temple" or "Rainbow" to say which song they wanted).
11. When I Am Baptized (an LDS Primary song that starts off with, "I like to look for rainbows whenever there is rain.." This is the one the kids meant when they said "Rainbow")
There are others, but I think these are my regular, go to songs. I've been trying to memorize "Baby Mine" from Dumbo but for some reason that one never seems to stick well enough for me to sing it without music.
Now, whether you are a good singer or not, your baby will love your voice. Why? Because it's not just about your voice. It's about the vibrations. Hold them with their head on your chest and when you hum, they can feel the vibrations and it soothes most babies. Lower songs seem to calm down my son more than high songs.
