Alright, so, my first son passed away (for those who may not know). He loved many things but he loved books. That's part of the reason I started this page. (I also love books and music...) Anyways, this year for a book recommendation I'm going to suggest some books that are known as Poke-a-dot books.
What they are:
They are books with little pieces of plastic embedded in them. These plastic pieces "pop" when you touch/press them. It is formatted so if you press every bubble it's already to read again. It can be used to promote counting, though I'm not sure my son caught onto that yet- but he still loved popping the bubbles. (Who doesn't? I mean when you get that plastic sheet of bubbles, who can resist popping every single bubble? And who hasn't hid the sheet from their kids at least once so that they could pop them later?)
We've tried 3. I really like 2 of them. The third is cute, but not in comparison to the other two. They've also expanded into books with colors (haven't tried those). So first one: Poke-a-dot! Old MacDonald's Farm. We loved this one! First page is "Old MacDonald had 10 cows" (then I chose to count the bubbles when my son pressed them. Sometimes I'd have to point to one he missed or help him with one- the ones on the right side of the page pop easily but on the left they have to be pressed- not hard, but my son was less than a year old when we started.) and then we'd continue with "Eieio. With a moo, moo...." I think you can guess the rest. Then each page has one less animal on it. So 9 pigs, 8 chickens, 7 sheep, 6 ducks, 5 horses, 4 goats, 3 cats, 2 dogs and 1 rooster.
The next one we read was about 10 little monsters. I don't own it, but I remember it being Halloween themed. I'm not sure why I didn't like it as much but here are some possible reasons: it might not have rhymed well; I couldn't sing along; or there were no animal sounds (I love doing animal sounds with my child.)
The last one we've tried is: Poke-a-dot! Who's in the Ocean? This one has a good rhyme to it: "Out in the ocean where the big waves roar...." Then it changes but someone comes out to explore and then there's another couplet on each page. This one was cute but different enough from Old MacDonalds Farm. My second son and I read it somewhat often. He's almost 9 months and started to feel/touch things. I think we'll start reading it more and more as he gets the hang of it.
If you want to get this book, I think babies who are starting to point and touch and press things will like it- up through those who are learning to count. Feel free to check out their other books too. The monster one was cute, but I know I liked the other two better. If you search Amazon for poke-a-dot books you'll find more. I found them at Costco/Sam's Club 3 years ago, but after I bought them, they disappeared and reappeared, so they may do so again. I think you'll have better/consistent luck on Amazon. :) Hope you enjoy them!
